These bedroom upgrades are really worth the money and effort

In a report by apartment therapy, 80% of respondents said they are willing to invest in quality products for their bedroom. It makes sense since most of us spend so much time in our bedrooms that most people want to make the space cozier and to their liking. The choice of bedroom design can also indicate the appeal of your home to potential buyers in the future. That makes bedroom upgrades more marketable than other rooms. So which ones are worth it?

According to Elyse Bouwmeeter, broker at Red and White Reality Inc. Brokerage: “When it comes to the bedroom, I honestly don’t think you should focus so much on the furnishings. In this market that’s so crazy, people only look at the number of bedrooms, the size of the bedrooms. People are always looking for ensuites.” If you can afford this renovation, then definitely go for it.

Another useful upgrade is the addition of more storage space. Clayton Orrigo, founder of the Hudson Advisory Team, says it’s the best way to upgrade the bedroom. He says, “That means making custom built-ins, taking ceiling-to-ceiling closet space, buying or building a custom bed that has storage underneath, or making beautiful custom closets from a company like Poliform or California Closets.”

Now you can also make upgrades that are not only practical, but rather fun. For example, Yari Karina Jones, a real estate agent at Keller Williams Select, says investing in a luxury upgrade is a great idea. She says: “I would no doubt add a gas or propane fireplace. It’s rare to see a fireplace in a bedroom, but when it does, it immediately conveys a sense of luxury, warmth and comfort.” She also adds, “And spring for the remote control option. Buyers are willing to pay a premium to enjoy the fireplace without having to get up.”

Renovations aren’t the only way to upgrade your bedroom. Frances Katzen, who co-founded Katzen Team with Douglas Elliman, says: “I really believe in using really clean litter. Keep in mind that people walk in and try to implement their own idea of home in a space. So if the linens are too frilly, if they’re too lacy, if they’re dated, it can turn people off.”

You don’t even have to spend an arm and a leg on these upgrades. “Go to Bed Bath & Beyond and look for white linens with gray or taupe edges. Get really clean, white linens, a comforter, four pillows, two on each side, and a bed skirt if nothing covers the bottom base. And then just keep the cut very modern and square,” suggests Katzen.
