The wicker basket really is a godsend when it comes to DIY home decor as it is so versatile and can be found fairly commonly at vintage shops, thrift stores and flea markets. You can find a beautiful basket almost for free, and for very little extra money, you can completely transform it. Other wicker materials that are great for DIY projects include cane and rattan.

A TikTok user named Sarah Teresinski, @redeux_style, a designer who specializes in upcycling, shared a project where she used a $2 basket she found at a thrift store, which was broken, by the way. turned into a beautiful flower box. Teresinki said, “Storage baskets are a great way to save money and keep things out of a landfill.”

Teresinki said the project only took 20 minutes and it fits her outdoor boho style perfectly. To make the planter, she first removed the metal hinges from the basket and then spraypainted the whole thing with blue spray paint. Here you can choose your preferred color.

After waiting for the paint to fully dry, she added a border with tassels, which she shared also found at a thrift store. She hot glued it to the basket and said, “I only added one row, but you can add as many as you want!” Stressing that this project is fully customizable. Other options include a pom pom border instead, or a border of a different color.

As Teresinki said, “You can make beautiful things out of things that people don’t want.” She estimated that the whole project had cost her about $5 in total since she already had many of the materials needed on hand.

If you end up using a wicker basket as a planter, be sure to leave the plant in its planter so you can avoid having to water it easier as you can easily take out the plant. It will also prevent a huge mess from happening.

If you are storing the planter in your home, line it with a plastic tray or landscaping fabric to prevent water from dripping onto your home’s surfaces.
