Painting is an excellent way to start DIY if you have no experience fixing things yourself as it doesn’t require much expertise and is quite affordable. Because it offers an inexpensive way to transform a room, it’s a great way to dress up your home before you put it on the market.

There’s nothing like knowing for a potential buyer that they don’t have to paint or touch up the walls before moving in. Tim Hur, realtor, broker and team manager at Point Honors Associates & Realtors in Atlanta shared some insights: “Despite the current market, first impressions are still very important. We strongly recommend painting the main living areas – living rooms, hallways and bedrooms.”

He said this is especially important once you’ve already started moving your furniture out of the house, as the marks are particularly noticeable and “you’ll see every scuff and mark on the house”.

Hur says, “For simple projects, painting front doors is always trendy. Just make sure you comply with all HOA rules and regulations.”

Aviva Kamler, a real estate agent at Sotheby’s International Realty in San Francisco, said she’s had some clients paint the garage, the garage door, and the interior of the garage before the sale to “make it look fresh and clean. Kamler shared that a new coat of paint on the kitchen cabinets also “changed the entire look of the house.”

Paul Rose, a real estate agent at Compass, shared, “Sellers don’t want to spend unnecessarily on a major bathroom renovation that buyers might very well spend post-purchase.” Painting offers a “great middle ground” that takes “every shade of bubblegum pink.” or the like can safely cover and neutralize”.
